Eclipse Calendar with Nodal Polarity (2021-2032)

Instructions
Note the eclipse date. Observe if it is a “North Node” or “South Node” eclipse. Also note if it is a Solar or Lunar eclipse, and astronomically, how nearly exact an eclipse (penumbral, annular, partial or total). Astrologically, we have four very basic types of eclipses, as itemized below:

  • Solar North Node celestial tide flowing in: “power surge”

  • Solar South Node celestial tide flowing out: “power outage”, release

  • Lunar North Node ‘tide in’ at Moon’s end / tide out at Sun’s (suction)

  • Lunar South Node ‘tide out’ at Moon’s end / tide in at Sun’s end (suction)

Working with Eclipses
Life is full of interesting daily and monthly events of all kinds. Forms enter and exit, situations arise and depart. The Nodes are almost always involved!

For astrological purposes, always note the sign and degree of each eclipse, as given in this calendar. Eclipses influence the sign, natal house, and most particularly any natal planet they conjunct within 1-3˚, or sometimes a larger orb. The rule of thumb is - “the closer the conjunction, the stronger the influence”.

Eclipses are interpreted by sign, strength, element, mode, type and (finally!) Nodal Polarity. Although seemingly obvious, this latter has been woefully neglected in astrological literature. My previous work and this calendar seek to correct this omission. The book Eclipses and You is specific to eclipses in signs (including health sections, and general effects for all twelve Ascendant signs); and by polarity based conjunctions and hard aspects to natal (and transit) planets.

The more advanced practitioner should also be aware of the zodiacal degrees in ‘hard aspect’ to an eclipse degree (square, opposed). Also, note your ‘quincunxing’ degrees (150˚, 240˚). Trines and sextile from an eclipse to a transit planet can produce results, often less dramatic than for the hard aspects. However, we are keeping it simple here by sticking to conjunctions and basic sign and house effects.

The Wise Practitioner
The wise astrologer doesn’t seek “bad” interpretations for South Node eclipses, nor necessarily “good” promise for the North Node events. Ideally, the practitioner views eclipses in the same manner as one does the incoming and receding ocean tides. One never fully knows what to expect until it happens! For instance, an exact South Node eclipse over a client’s natal Jupiter could possibly indicate a foolish loss of a fortune, or conversely, the bequeathment of one! This same event can herald in a host of other intriguing possibilities, dependent on Jupiter’s position in the natal chart, ‘his’ general significations, and all he governs for that personal chart. Many times, I’ve seen this eclipse refer exclusively to the health of a client’s grandparent, teacher or uncle. Often, one sees all manner of fascinating effects, rather than just one. In this manner Eclipses can, and do so often represent items, affairs and people outside oneself.

In viewing South Node eclipses, be open to positive manifestations. The outflowing tide suggested by a South Node event is often surprisingly positive for release, cleansing, giving, accepting, forgiving, volunteering, dissemination, bequeathing, “letting go”, relaxing, and spiritual epiphanies! These are good concepts to keep at hand, especially when working with concerned clients.

Conversely, North Node eclipses bring the celestial tides rushing in, and most folks prefer arrivals to departures. However, as positive as these events so often are, (within the upcoming yearly quarter or year), they are not invariably so. Be prepared for possible “overload” in the arena of a North Node event. Or, consider, what exactly is arriving? I recall one attractive woman regretfully jesting “yeah, but look at what I attract!”

In interpreting eclipses of either polarity, much depends on: a) what an individual has going on already; b) their plans; c) people in their life - and their situations; d) age; e) personal karma; f) life destiny; g) state of their vital force; h) what they themselves envision; i) attitude. Underline ‘i’.

It is good to keep in mind how profoundly an ‘event oriented’ culture we live in. Clients may expect you to predict events! Many eclipses influence us internally or psychologically. Do not always expect external events, or think that you can for sure predict them. That being said, major external events that do occur in our lives, almost invariably do so in the wake of an eclipse (and sometimes a week or two early!).

The useful astrologer can suggest assisting actions to alter the outcome of worrisome eclipses (if possible to do so), and to creatively envision methods for working along the avenues suggested by the eclipsed planet, sign and house directly involved. In this manner, one provides a channel for the energy to flow through. Always inquire of your client as to what has already been previously going on with these same natally indicated themes, and what they are personally anticipating/envisioning.

Health
Eclipses can be supremely influential to health. Astute health practitioners are aware of eclipses current to the year, and their potential physical ramifications throughout the following year or two, (as planetary triggers arrive). The healer notes the North Node eclipse for where to expect strengthening force (or overload) - both individually and collectively. Likewise, the astrologically aware healer is empowered to preempt any increase of individual and collective physical weakening (South Node). Note the Body Zone (sign) of the eclipse, and what body parts and functions it governs. Also consider any natal planet squared by an eclipse or transiting nodes. This planet experiences more stress. Each planet governs or influences various functions, glands, and body parts. South and North Node conjunctions of natal planets always occur near an eclipse, and are integrally involved in the eclipse pattern..

Immense detail is provided for both South and North Node conjunctions by transit- to - natal planets in the book Medical Astrology in Action. This text is also useful for purely natal-natal conjunctions, and for medical evaluation of South and North Node by element and sign.

General conjunctions of transit Nodes to natal planets, (and their reverse - the transit planets to natal Nodes) is provided in The Lunar Nodes: Your Key to Excellent Chart Interpretation. This book also includes interpretive material for Nodes by natal houses and signs.

Four Types of Astrological Eclipses: General Description

Solar North Node eclipses herald a “power surge” into the sign, and natal house they occur in; or regarding the specific affairs and significations governed by the planet(s) they conjunct. This influence can be either positive or negative; strong or weak, depending on many other factors (read the introductory section). Effects can last a year or more (especially with total eclipses), and are triggered when various transits line up over this degree by hard aspect or quincunx.

Solar South Node eclipses bring a “power outage” or “release” into the sign, and natal house they occur in; or regarding the specific affairs and signification governed by the planet(s) they conjunct. This influence can be either positive or negative, strong or weak, depending on many other factors (per the above introduction). Effects can last a year or more (especially if the eclipse is total), and are triggered when various transits line up over this degree by hard aspect or quincunx.

Lunar North Node eclipses bring a “power surge” into the sign, and natal house they occur in, or regarding the specific affairs and significations governed by the natal (or transit) planet(s) they conjunct. This influence can be either positive or negative, strong or weak, depending on many other factors (per the introductory tips). Effects can last a year or more (especially if the eclipse is total), and are triggered when various transits line up over this degree by hard aspect or quincunx.

However, the Lunar North Node eclipse is bringing to fullness the affairs of the Sun at the opposite Nodal polarity (South). The Sun hold the string of the yoyo, so to speak. This is why I call Sol “the Eclipse Master” when determining effects of Lunar eclipses.

Be alert for a possible “power surge” or strong influx into the affairs of the sign and house that the Lunar eclipse occurs in; or over the planet the Lunar eclipse is conjunct. There may be a possible “power outage” or release in the opposite sign, house, or over any planet the Lunar eclipse opposes - where both the Sun and South Node will be at the time of the Lunar North Node eclipse.) It is helpful to envision his as a type of suction created at the opposite pole - the Sun’s position! Energy comes in at the Moon’s end, and out at the Sun’s end. Sometimes the opposite pole’s effect is delayed a few weeks or months, but not always. The Full Moon brings fruition to the theme of the polarity, as governed by the Sun.

Lunar South Node eclipses bring a “power outage” or release and dissemination into the sign, and natal house they occur in; or regarding the specific affairs and significations governed by the natal or transit planet they conjunct. This influence can be either positive or negative, strong or weak, depending on many other factors (described in the introductory tips). Effects can last a year or more (especially if the eclipse is total), and are triggered when various transits line up over this degree.

However, the Lunar North Node eclipse is bringing to fullness the affairs of the Sun at the opposite Nodal polarity (North). The Sun hold the string of the yoyo, so to speak. This is why I call Sol “the Eclipse Master” when determining effects of Lunar eclipses.

Be alert for a possible “power outage” or strong effect in the sign and house that the Lunar eclipse occurs in, or over the planet the Lunar eclipse is conjunct. Simultaneously, there may be a possible “power surge” in the opposite sign, house, or over any planet the Lunar eclipse opposes - where both the Sun and North Node will be at the time of the Lunar North Node eclipse.) Consider this as a type of suction produced at the South Node end, pulling in force at the opposite pole by sign and house. Energy releases or drags away at the Moon’s end, yet rushes in at the Sun’s end (just wait a few weeks or months! The effect may be delayed, but not always). The Full Moon brings fruition to the theme of the polarity, as governed by the Sun.

Transit planets moving within the year (following an eclipse) to conjoin, square, quincunx or oppose eclipse degrees can potentially trigger various events (both positive, and negative.) This famous effect is typically strongest in the first quarter following the eclipse.

The planets that most reliably trigger eclipses are Mars, Sun, and the planet that rules the sign the eclipse was in (Mercury for Gemini eclipses, Venus for Libra eclipses, etc.). Jupiter, Saturn and large planets can certainly be powerful triggering forces. These generally last far longer than Mars eclipses (unless ‘he’ is stationing), and will typically play a strong hand in collective events. When timing exact trigger dates, include the transiting planet’s arrival to the exact eclipse degree. However, also wait for, and include the Moon as your clock’s “second hand”. Luna will arrive by hard aspect (conjunction, square or opposition) to the eclipse degree within a week (prior or post) or the time the triggering planet does. This date is typically very active.
