QUINCUNXES, YODS & AVERSIONS

& How to Interpret them

Quincunxes and Yods are the quintessential aspects of ill health and must be understood by all professing to study medical astrology. However, their correct interpretation is likewise essential to all branches of astrology!

Imagine an easy, useful template to begin interpreting those weird ‘Quincunxes’, ‘Yods’ and ‘Aversions’ in your natal and transit charts? This is exactly the object and goal of my upcoming class on July 28th, 2024 at The Academy for Astrological Medicine!

One plausible reason for the relative dearth of information about these three closely related astrological conditions is because they are so difficult to describe! Or so it is thought. Student demand has resulted with this class.

As Astrologers, we all get secretly stuck on interpretive dilemmas that make no sense to us. Some examples are:

“How can these aspects look so caring, and yet also so cruel in the same chart?” 

“How come one natal chart testimony indicate a devoted ‘family man’ while another testimony in the same chart shows a tyrant!”?

“Why does this chart show wealth when he is impoverished?”

Or perhaps: “Why didn’t that appendicitis show in her chart?!”

My guess is that you didn’t take quincunxes into account! Or even see them! I am forever impressed that in fifteen years, not one single student (to date) has seen two close transit quincunxes existing to both natal lights in a death-chart date exam of transit skills. Is this because that by their very nature, quincunxes represent hard to define “remote causations”? We hope to correct this ubiquitous reading skills deficit in this class!

Yods: A configuration of two quincunxes is a ‘Yod’, or ‘Finger of God’, The apex planet is situated between two quincunxes formed by two other planets in sextile to one another. The apex planet finds itself in a perplexing double conundrum. In this class you receive general steps to deciphering what any Yod might specifically mean to the native, and also, how this aspect can be usefully framed.

‘Aversion’ occurs between two signs that are naturally, per each degree - quincunx all other degrees of a sign they are averted to. Averted signs share neither mode, nor element in common between them!  Quincunxes and Yods are built on Aversions.

Averted signs exist in a disconnected state, unable to “feed” each other, as they are unable to send or receive rays between them. Each sign has four signs that stand on the seasonal wheel in aversion to itself. However, only three of them appear causative of major life crises, and/or health problems. Taken from the Ascendant, these constitute the three traditional ‘malefic’ houses!

Traditionally, the 6th, 8th and 12th “houses” or angles from the birth Ascendant’s degree may suggest very specific bodily weaknesses. Likewise, these three houses pertain to all manner of health influences - being, in essence, the houses of health adjustments and healing. They have their useful sides!

The 6th angle, (at 150 ̊ forward), is the “house of health,” whereas the 8th angle (210 ̊), rules death, crises, purging, and transformation  amongst other things. The mysterious house of psychological health and secret weaknesses in the body/mind is the 12th house, that angle from the rising degree positioned at 330˚ ̊ forward from the Ascendant. These three houses (or directions in the sky at birth), form a group, the ‘malefic’ houses, or amongst the Jyotish of India, the ‘dusthana’ houses.

Curiously, the 2nd house, an angle also in found quincunx to the Ascendant possesses a building up influence, nourishing to bodily affairs. This explains why it governs food, money, income, and many other items that support the native. However, the 2nd angle is of interest here too, being opposite the 8th.

There are two opposite theories as to how to select herbal, gem, color, and nutritional remedies to correct these three “malefic” houses.  These opposite positions can be termed “The Avoidance Approach” and the “Strengthening Approach.”

We will introduce these opposing remediating approaches in the July 28th class.

In this class we will examine the quincunxes and yods for each zodiac sign. Next, we will study some fascinating conditions noted for quincunxes between various planetary pairs, and how to craft a partial resolve and positive uses of these life conundrums!
