THE SECRETS OF THE HAND DRAWN HOROSCOPE

For over two millennia, astrologers drew their charts by hand. Once computers arrived, this practice rapidly declined until only a tiny percent of today’s astrologers persist in this venerable “old school” practice. Why then, would I recommend a practice that demands the requisite pens, rulers, chart forms, plus a trained and steady hand?  The simple answer is a reiteration of my first teacher’s advice:

“To read a computer “print-out” chart is like petting a cat with gloves on.”

Why might this remarkable statement be true? Is it even true? And if true, why do so few prefer the personally drafted chart over the ‘cold’ computer print-out?

Obviously, modern computer programs offer a fast, easily calculated chart, printed to one’s custom specifications. Think of the time saved! It is understandable why the vast majority of students and professionals prefer their trusty printouts. However, something is missing. Let’s examine the significant perks that a hand-drawn chart offers the patient practitioner.

To execute astrological symbols from your own pen automatically links you with the personal “Universal Template” of your client.  I call this template the “Permanent Planetary Resonance Imprint”- the natal chart.

The act of drawing out the client’s wheel, signs, and planets feels rather like plugging a cord into “their” outlet! One can palpably feel the ‘hum’ of informational images flowing through the handmade chart, straight from the Universe into your own fingertips, insight and vision. Personally, I consider this practice so beneficially clarifying that never once have I deterred from this essential step in my decades long chart reading process.

Once you complete the horoscope in your own hand, study the chart awhile, taking notes if you please. Then, allow the chart to “simmer”, returning to it later. More information is now revealed! In this manner, insights and answers slowly emerge in stages, much like those old style photos used to slowly appear in the ‘developer’ chemicals. It is amazing how much one can miss when attempting reading too fast. It is also true that readers whose work style demands an immediate approach will not be able to adopt this method.

There is a second reason to invest in this ‘artistic’ process. Creating a hand drawn horoscope for your client constitutes a significant and special act of respect for their soul. They know it, even if nothing is said. Over the years, the occasional client approximately relates:  “I know that because you provide a hand-drawn chart, that you care about me”, or, “I chose you because it means a lot to me that you take the time to create a hand drawn chart”. Many clients hold on to their hand drafted charts lifelong as cherished tokens of their experience with you, sometimes framing them.

It may be difficult or impossible for you to create hand-drawn charts for each client. However, next time you are stuck over a client’s vocational choice or medical mystery - try scrambling up a horoscope in your own handwriting. Just copy it straight from the print out to a chart form blank. Sure, you can calculate the chart on computer, but do copy it out by hand.  Keep it simple - just your major planets and nodes for starters. Transits and progressions can be entered on the outside of the circle. You might well discover for yourself how this practice assists in the clearing of interpretive mists!

Today’s astrological practices are computer based and will remain so. The demands of a busy practice lead most to regard the hand-drawn chart process as an impractical and unwanted increase of ‘prep’ time. This is understandable. However, those willing to adopt the ancient way will uncover for themselves the secrets of the venerable hand-drawn chart. There is never a better time than the holidays to buy yourself some elegant chart forms and fine point pens!
